Researchers, industry representatives and innovation experts gathered at Cibus Tec 2026 for the BioPackMan workshop, a dedicated event focused on the future of biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials and the pathways needed to bring sustainable packaging innovations closer to market.
The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to connect different perspectives across the packaging value chain, from materials research and product development to policy, funding and industrial adoption. As sustainability requirements continue to evolve and new European regulations reshape the packaging landscape, participants discussed both the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in the coming years.
The event was opened and moderated by Isella Vicini from Tinexta Innovation Hub, who welcomed attendees and introduced the workshop’s objective: fostering dialogue between research organisations, industry stakeholders and innovation actors working towards more sustainable packaging solutions.
A key contribution came from Tanja Kosanovic Milickovic of the National Technical University of Athens and Technical Coordinator of BioPackMan, who presented the project’s vision and ongoing activities. Her presentation highlighted how BioPackMan is advancing the development of next-generation biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials designed to support circularity, sustainability and eco-innovation in the packaging sector. The project aims to contribute to the transition towards packaging systems with reduced environmental impact while maintaining the performance required by modern food and consumer product applications.
The discussion then moved to emerging materials and regulatory developments. Marco Scatto from Tinexta Innovation Hub explored the role of next-generation biodegradable and recyclable polymer materials and additives for smart packaging applications, examining their potential within the context of the latest European packaging regulations.
Industry perspectives were brought to the forefront by Michele Cantisani from Bolton, who shared practical insights and lessons learned from participating in the BioPackMan project. The presentation offered attendees a valuable view of how innovation projects can support the development and future adoption of more sustainable packaging solutions in real industrial environments.
The workshop also addressed the broader European innovation ecosystem. Samuele Ambrosetti from the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) presented the priorities and funding opportunities available through the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking, highlighting the strategic role of bio-based innovation in achieving European sustainability goals.
Looking ahead, Massimo Rinaldi from beWarrant provided an overview of upcoming European funding opportunities relevant to organisations operating in the food and packaging sectors, offering participants practical guidance on future innovation pathways and collaborative opportunities.
One of the most engaging moments of the afternoon was the round-table discussion, which generated a lively exchange between speakers and attendees. Questions from the audience reflected a strong interest in the scalability of sustainable materials, the implications of evolving regulations and the importance of collaboration across research and industry.
The workshop confirmed that the transition towards more circular packaging systems cannot rely on technological innovation alone. It requires continuous dialogue between material developers, manufacturers, policymakers, funding bodies and end users. Events such as this create the space for these conversations and help accelerate the translation of research results into real-world impact.
